ANTONI DONCHEV TRIO
This is the most recent formation created by Antoni Donchev with Pierre Terziiski and Rosen Zahariev, known for their artistic boldness and courage not to compromise with the audiences. They founded a style of their own in the music of improvisation and jazz. Antoni Donchev’s compositions for the Trio have a special expression and genre diversity to remove the margins between improvising and classical sound.
Jazzanitza is a group of Bulgarian jazz musicians, with musical searches, combining contemporary jazz with elements of folk music. They belong to the first generation of Bulgarian musicians after 1989, who had the chance to receive their jazz education abroad and return to their homeland.
Jazzanitza follows the footsteps of the great Bulgarian folk and jazz musicians like Ivo Papasov, Milcho Leviev, Theodosii Spassov, Antoni Donchev and many others, who have given the undeniable proof, that Bulgarian folk music and jazz can live together successfully.
Misho Yossifov’s idea of Jazz is a large field of
improvisations, where every single musician has a place of his own and everyone is in a place that belongs to him. MYXTET consists of five musicians, easy to work with, completely understanding each other freely and easily.
JIVKO PETROV TRIO
JP3, founded in 2007, soon became the most recognized jazz formation in Bulgaria. The musicians released three albums so far: Understandable in 2007, followed by It’s a Dream in 2012 with special guest Vasko Vassilev and Between the worlds, after a very successful tour in America in the summer of 2015. The trio has many live performances in clubs, festivals all around the world including several performances with Sarah Brightman, Zucchero, Vasko Vasilev and other famous musicians in Royal Albert Hall in London.
JAZZ SURPRISE II
15 years ago, during the Spring Apollonia Festival in Sofia, Jivko Petrov and Angl Zaberski Jr created arrangements and improvisations, based on the classical compositions of Bach, Mozart Grieg, Rahmaninov and Gershwin.
We named the project Jazz Surprise, because it was an exciting new experience for us and for our fans to hear jazz version of the top classical works. The result was an amazing concert, still entertaining us - says Jivko Petrov.
THE GOLDEN PROJECT
The Golden Project was established in 2010 and started as a trio, but soon expanded to a quintet. The current formation includes Tony Zlatanov - vocals and piano, Martin Tashev- trumpet, Dimitar Liolev - saxophone, Evden Dimitrov - double bass and Emil Pehlivanov - drums. Their music is an interesting mix of pop, jazz and soul, they have released two albums so far - Seven Sense and Rolling Notes.
THE RAG WALTZ TIME
The Rag Waltz Time is the most recent project of the Wladigeroff Brothers & Band. From all eight compositions in the album seven are result of an original musical communication between swing, jazz, Balkan sound and the modern grooves. The last composition is a new arrangement of their grandfather’s popular piece Gospodsko Horo, made in their unmistakable style.
HRISTO YOTSOV PROJECT
Hristo Yotsov is among the most inventive Bulgarian jazz musicians. His latest project Jazz Cats was created in the autumn of 2016 and will be released as a studio album this September. Over the years Hristo Yotsov works with many young and talented musicians, Bulgarians and guests from Europe.
For his Jazz Cats project Hristo Yotsov has invited Arnau Garrofe, a young saxophonist from Spain, the pianist Lubomir Tsanev and the bassist Dimitar Karamfilov.
LILIA ILIEVA &
THE MINIMUM QUARTET
The inspiration of Lilia Ilieva and the incredible musicians of Minimum Quartet comes from the American jazz compositions of the early 20th century. They follow the vocal tradition of Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Carmen McRae, and instrumentalists like Miles Davis, John Coltrane and others. The voice and the interpretation of Lilia Ilieva proves that an artist can learn the language of jazz music as long as there is love, talent and hard work.
A HARD DAY’S NIGHT
Five talented musicians from the National Television Night-time Birds show will be the stars in the last jazz night of the Festival. The idea of Apollonia is to present the broad spectrum of their musical and performing talent.
